Name:
Two Biting Midges and Beetle
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Russia
Size: Amber piece is 1.0 inches
This is a great multiple insect in amber piece. There are two Biting Midges (Ceratopogonidae) and a Beetle (Coleoptera) trapped in this nugget of Russian Baltic Amber. The Biting Midges may have blood in their stomachs, meaning blood DNA of Eocene animals may be extracted (remember Jurassic Park?). All three insects are close together and display well. This is a very unusual array of different insects in amber (close-up photo is included).
