Name:
Centipede (Myriapoda, Chilopoda)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is 1.3 inches long
This is a very rare amber fossil. It is a fine Centipede from Russia. Centipedes differ from Millipedes in that they only have one pair of legs on each body segment - Millipedes have two pair. Centipedes also have a pair of curved fangs that Millipedes do not possess. This specimen is very distinct - easily identifiable as a Centipede. The head, antennae, and legs are intact and well preserved. The centipede is fully encased in the amber, and it is seen trapped in the center of the nugget. This is a very collectible and unusual inclusion in Baltic Amber (close-up photo is included for free).
