Fabulous Fungus Gnat Entombed in Baltic Amber
Stock Number  ACBFG806
EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Dark-Winged Fungus Gnat (Sciaridae)
Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Amber Deposits
Location:  Baltic Coast, Russia
Size:  Piece of amber is 0.9 inches long

This is a very nice insect trapped in Baltic Amber. It is a beautiful Dark-Winged Fungus Gnat (Sciaridae) from the Eocene Deposits of Russia. The piece of fossilized tree resin has been highly polished on all sides to reveal the fine detail of the insect inclusion. The head, legs, wings, and antennae of the Fungus Gnat are all wonderfully displayed. The Fungus Gnat is easily seen with the naked eye in the honey-colored piece of fossil ''ooze'' that also contains another Fungus Gnat (not pictured). This is an excellent example of a Dark-Winged Fungus Gnat preserved in amber.
