Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Amber Deposits
Location:  Baltic Coast, Russia
Size:  Amber piece is 0.9 inches long

This is a beautiful pair of insects in amber. These are Fungus Gnats (Mycetiphilidae) from the Eocene deposits of Russia. Both specimens are incredibly well-preserved in the fossilized tree resin. The tiny features are nicely showcased - the legs, wings, and antennae display beautifully. The Fungus Gnats are easy to see trapped within the clear yellow amber piece. This is a wonderful pair of fossil insects entombed in Baltic Amber. (Actually, there are four insects in the amber piece - two are photographed.)
