Name:
Insects in Mexican Amber
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Chiapas, Mexico
Size: Amber piece is 0.8 inches long
This is an excellent grouping of insects entombed in Mexican Amber. This type of amber was known to the ancient Maya and Aztec civilizations. This large piece of fossilized tree resin has been highly polished on all sides to reveal the fine detail of the insect inclusions. There is one fly that is easily seen in the center of the amber piece. There are at least two more insects trapped in the amber that are hard to see in the photo. This is a very uncommon example of insects in Mexican Amber.
