EXTINCTIONS Choice

Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Amber Deposits
Location:  Baltic Coast, Russia
Size:  Piece of amber is 0.45 inches long

This is a very detailed insect entrapped in Baltic Amber. It is a Fungus Gnat (Mycetophilidae) from the Eocene Deposits of Russia. The piece of fossilized tree resin has been highly polished on all sides to reveal the fine detail of the insect inclusion. The head, body, legs, and wings of the Fungus Gnat are beautifully displayed. The Fungus Gnat is easily seen with the naked eye in the honey-colored piece of fossil ''ooze''. This is a wonderful example of a Fungus Gnat preserved in amber.
