Excellent Baltic Biting Midge - Possible DNA
Stock Number  ACBBM902
EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Biting Midge (Ceratopogonidae)
Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Amber Deposits
Location:  Baltic Coast, Russia
Size:  Piece of amber is 0.9 inches long

This is a very fine blood-sucking insect in amber. It is a Biting Midge (Ceratopogonidae) from the Baltic Coast of Russia. Because it is a Biting Midge, it may have traces of blood or tissue in its stomach. This blood could contain the DNA of extinct animals (remember Jurassic Park?). Therefore, this is a very collectible insect in amber. The fly has great detail and was trapped is a classic ''flying'' pose. And the bug is very easily seen in the amber piece that also contains three other Biting Midges! This is a very nice example of a ''Vampire Midge'' trapped in amber.
