EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   True Midge (Chironomidae)
Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Amber Deposits
Location:  Baltic Coast, Russia
Size:  Amber piece is 0.7 inches long

This is a nice fossil fly in amber. It is a True Midge (Chironomidae) from the Baltic Coast of Russia. The insect exhibits very fine detail. The head, body, wings, and long legs are all present. The insect is easily seen in the honey-colored piece of amber - it can even be seen with the naked eye. There is also another fly preserved in the amber nugget (not pictured). This is a great specimen of a True Midge in fossil ''ooze'' (large close-up photo is included for free).
