Name:
RARE Blue Amber
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Mines
Location: Dominican Republic
Size: Amber chunk is 3.4 inches long! (69 grams!)
This is an extremely collectible piece of Dominican Amber. It is a HUGE chunk of fabled ''Blue Amber'' - prized by collectors and jewelry makers worldwide. Blue Amber is only found in a handful of places around the world (NOT in Baltic Amber, for example), and only in a select few strata in the Dominican Republic. Scientists are still not entirely sure what causes the amber to be blue in color - it is not from pigmentation or a distribution of fine light scattering particles, but probably from fluorescence. The shades of Blue Amber range from deep blue/violet to barely perceptible blue/green. The most common Blue Amber only has a glint of blue which is visible in reflected light. And most blue amber fluoresces under UV light.
This specimen is a massive chunk of this Blue Amber. It is unpolished - the large, smooth face is natural, not polished! This area reflects a very easily-seen royal blue hue. The amber piece is extremely large - almost three and a half inches long and weighing 69 grams - WOW! The right jeweler could turn this specimen into a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry, or keep it intact as a unique collectible. This is a HUGE, top quality example of this highly sought-after ''Blue Gold'' - one of the best examples we have EVER seen.
