Winged Termites (Isoptera), Gall Gnats (Cecidomyiidae)
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Mines
Location: Dominican Republic
Size: Amber piece is 1.55 inches long
This is a very impressive amber fossil. It is a swarm of FIVE Winged Termites (Isoptera) and THIRTEEN Gall gnats (Cecidomyiidae) from the Dominican Republic. All five Termites are complete and have great detail. Their gossamer wings are beautifully showcased. Each of the Termites are easily seen with the naked eye, and are nicely spaced within the amber piece. The many Gall Gnats are also nicely scattered about the amber piece. This is an excellent grouping of Termites and Gall Gnats trapped in amber - a very collectible fossil (this specimen was recently acquired from a MAJOR fossil collection).
