Name:
Grotesque Dance Fly
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Mines
Location: Dominican Republic
Size: Amber piece is 0.5 inches long
This is a very unusual fly in amber. It is a large Dance Fly (Empididae) trapped in Dominican Amber. This specimen is complete and nicely displayed - the entire fly is intact and well preserved. The fly has fine detail, especially on the HUGE, spiny mandibles that are very easily seen. There are also two nice Biting Midges preserved in the amber nugget. This is a very distinct insect with incredibly large mandibles preserved (small close-up photo is included for free).
