This is a rare example of a classic amber fossil. It is a True Mosquito trapped in Dominican Amber. A True Mosquito with DNA blood in its belly was the the premise of the ''Jurassic Park'' book and movie series. Many gnats and flies LOOK like mosquitoes, but true mosquitoes are rare in amber. This specimen has great detail, as many of its features are easily seen. The large, compound eyes and the blood-sucking proboscis are beautifully showcased. And, yes, this parasite COULD have extinct animal blood preserved in its stomach! This is a fine example of one of the most famous types of insects found in amber (small close-up photo is included for free).
