Name:
Winged Termite (Isoptera)
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Mines
Location: Dominican Republic
Size: Amber piece is 0.7 inches long
This is a very nice example of a fossil termite in amber. It is a Winged Termite (Isoptera) entrapped in Dominican Amber. This specimen has great detail, especially on the head, body, and legs. The long wings are present, and are very well preserved. There is also a nice fly entombed next to the termite. Both insects are easily seen in the honey-colored amber piece. This is a very fine termite caught in ancient amber (small close-up photo is included for free).
