This is a very fine blood-sucking insect in amber. It is a Biting Midge (Ceratopogonidae) from the Baltic Coast of Russia. Because it is a Biting Midge, it may have traces of blood in its stomach. This blood could contain the DNA of extinct animals (remember Jurassic Park?). Therefore, this is a very collectible insect in amber. The fly has great detail and was trapped is a classic ''flying'' pose. And the bug is very easily seen in the amber piece. This is a very nice example of a ''Vampire Midge'' (large close-up photo is included for free.)
