Name:
Biting Midge
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is 0.75 inches long
This is a very fine blood-sucking insect in amber. It is a nice Biting Midge (Ceratopogonidae) from the Baltic Coast of Russia. Because it is a Biting Midge, it may have traces of blood in its stomach. This blood could contain the DNA of extinct animals (remember Jurassic Park?). Therefore, this is a very collectible insect in amber. The midge has great detail and is very easily seen in the amber piece. There is also a True Midge and a Long-Legged Fly caught in the amber piece. This is an excellent example of a ''Vampire Midge'' trapped in ''fossil ooze''.
