True Midge (Chironomidae)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is 0.6 inches long
This is a VERY detailed insect in Baltic Amber. It is a True Midge (Chironomidae) from Russia. This fly has great detail preserved - all of the features are quite distinct. The midge was trapped in a very displayable pose. But the best feature of this fossil is the amber nugget - the fly is easily seen trapped within the ''fossil ooze''. This is an excellent midge that is nicely showcased in its amber piece (large close-up photo is included for free.)
