Name:
Winged Termite (Isoptera)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is 1 inch long
This is an excellent example of a fossil termite in amber. It is a large Winged Termite (Isoptera) entombed in Baltic Amber. This specimen has great detail, especially on the head, legs, and antennae. But the long wings are the real prize on this specimen - they are simply spectacular. The detail of the venation is very easily seen, which is quite unusual. The termite can be seen with the naked eye trapped within the large, honey-colored amber piece. This is an extremely detailed example of a termite preserved in ancient tree resin (large close-up photo is included for free).
