Name:
Winged Termite (Isoptera)
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Dominican Republic
Size: Amber piece is 0.6 inches long
This is a very nice example of a fossil termite in amber. It is a large Winged Termite (Isoptera) entombed in Dominican Amber. This specimen has great detail, especially on the head, body, and antennae. But the real prize is the wings, which are extremely well preserved. There is also a many other termite wings fossilized next to the complete termite. The insect is easily seen almost filling the cognac-colored amber piece. This is a very fine Winged Termite trapped in fossil ''ooze'' (small close-up photo is included for free).
