Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is 0.7 inches long
This is a rare and unusual animal in Baltic Amber. It is a Spiny Millipede (Diplopoda, Polyxenidae) of the type Polyxenus sp. Millipedes were rarely trapped in amber, and are usually poorly preserved. This specimen has great detail - note the very fine bristles preserved on both sides of the Millipede. The insect can be seen trapped within the colorful amber piece. This is a very bizarre and collectible organism entombed in Amber (large close-up photo is included for free).
