This is a beautiful insect in amber. It is a Fungus Gnat (Mycetiphilidae) from the Eocene deposits of Russia. This specimen is incredibly well-preserved in the fossilized tree resin. Each tiny feature is nicely showcased. The eyes and segmented antennae are easily seen, and the legs and wings display beautifully. The gossamer wings even have an eerie ''halo'' effect, which showcases the specimen that much more. The Fungus Gnat is easy to see within the clear amber piece. Also, there is another fly trapped within the amber nugget. This is a wonderful fossil insect entombed in Baltic Amber (large close-up photo is included for free).
