Name:
Rare Nasute Termite
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Mines
Location: Dominican Republic
Size: Amber piece is 0.85 inches long
This is a very unusual insect in amber. It is a textbook Nasute Termite from the Dominican Republic. This type of termite differs from the more common termites by having a long, pointed ''beak'', which is easily seen on this specimen. This ''unicorn'' horn sets this termite apart from most other fossil insects. The rest of the termite is complete and has excellent detail. The grotesque bug is beautifully displayed in the honey-colored amber nugget. This is a very collectible example of a nasty Nasute Termite trapped in fossilized tree sap (small close-up photo is included for free).
