Name:
Dark Winged Fungus Gnat (Sciaridae), Botanicals
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Mines
Location: Dominican Republic
Size: Amber piece is 0.9 inches long
This is an unusual set of inclusions in fossil amber. It is a large Dark Winged Fungus Gnat (Sciaridae) and many botanicals from the Dominican Republic. The fly has very nice detail, and is preserved in a very aesthetic pose. The botanicals (wood and buds) are easily seen in the cognac-colored amber piece. This is a great example of specimens from the both the Plant and Animal Kingdoms trapped together in the same piece of amber (small close-up photo is included for free).
