Name:
Mite and Humpbacked Fly
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is 0.85 inches long
This is a very unusual pair of ancient organisms. There is a Mite (Acari) and a Humpbacked Fly (Phoridae) trapped together in this amber piece. This fossil is rare because the Mite is an Arachnid and the Humpbacked Fly is an insect - these types rarely mingled together. The mite displays its long legs beautifully, and the fly is easily seen in the amber piece. There are also botanicals and bubbles preserved in the amber nugget. This is a very collectible amber fossil from the Baltic Coast of Russia (large close-up photo is included for free).
