Name:
Rare Blue Amber
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Mines
Location: Dominican Republic
Size: Amber chunk is 2.4" X 2.0" X 0.7" (26.9 grams)
This is an extremely collectible piece of Dominican Amber. It is a large chunk of fabled ''Blue Amber'' - prized by collectors and jewelry makers worldwide. Blue Amber is only found in a handful of places around the world (NOT in Baltic Amber, for example), and only in a select few strata in the Dominican Republic. Scientists are still not entirely sure what causes the amber to be blue in color - it is not from pigmentation or a distribution of fine light scattering particles, but probably from flourescence. The shades of Blue Amber range from deep blue/violet to barely perceptible blue/green. The most common Blue Amber only has a glint of blue which is visible in reflected light. And most blue amber fluoresces under UV light.
This specimen is a very large chunk of this Blue Amber. It is essentially unpolished, except for a nice polished spot on the side of the nugget. This area reflects a very easily-seen royal blue hue. The amber piece is unusually large - almost two and a half inches long and weighing almost 27 grams. The right jeweler could turn this specimen into a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. This is a very collectible example of this highly sought-after ''Blue Gold''.
