Name:
Fungus Gnat (Mycetophilidae)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is 0.65 inches long
This is a beautiful insect in amber. It is a Fungus Gnat (Mycetiphilidae) from the Eocene Deposits of Russia. This specimen is incredibly well-preserved in the fossilized tree resin. Each tiny feature is nicely showcased. The legs and segmented antennae are very easily seen. But the amazing feature about this specimen is the way the wings are preserved - in the shape of a heart! There is even a dark halo around the heart that seems to glow. Also, the Fungus Gnat is easy to see within the clear amber piece. This is a unique amber fossil that would be a great gift for a loved one on Valentines Day or other special occasion (large close-up photo is included for free).
