Name:
Wood Gnat (Anisopodidae)
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Mines
Location: Dominican Republic
Size: Amber piece is 0.55 inches long
This is a very unusual insect in amber. It is a large Wood Gnat (Anisopodidae) from the Dominican Republic. This type is known for its unusual segmented antennae, which are easily seen on this specimen. The rest of the gnat is also very well preserved. The gnat is beautifully displayed and nicely centered within the amber nugget. This is a very fine example of a rare fossilized Wood Gnat (small close-up photo is included for free).
