Name:
Fighting Ants with Beetle
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is 1 inch across
This is a very interesting amber fossil. It is a pair of fighting Worker Ants (Hymenoptera) and a Beetle (Coleoptera) trapped in Baltic Amber. The ants seem to be caught in a ''death struggle'', of which neither one emerged victorious. The beetle seems uninterested in the ants, as his wings are starting to emerge out from underneath his wing covers. All three insects have great detail and display beautifully. They are easily seen in the center of the large amber nugget. This is an extremely unusual grouping of fossil insects in amber (large close-up photo is included for free).
