Name:
True Centipede (Myriapoda; Chilopoda)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is about 0.75 inches long
This is a rare amber specimen. It is an excellent Centipede (Myriapoda; Chilopoda) trapped in Baltic Amber. Centipedes differ from Millipedes in that they only have one pair of legs on each body segment - Millipedes have two pairs. This specimen is complete and nicely displayed - the entire insect is intact and well preserved. The Centipede has fine detail and is easily seen in the amber nugget, especially under magnification. A Centipede is a very rare inclusion in Baltic Amber, much rarer than in Dominican Amber. This is an extremely collectible amber fossil from Russia (large close-up photo is included for free).
