Name:
Winged Termite (Isoptera)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is 1.5 inches long, 0.9 inches wide
This is an excellent example of a fossil termite in amber. It is a large Winged Termite (Isoptera) entombed in Baltic Amber. This specimen has great detail, especially on the head, legs, and antennae. But the long wings are the real prize on this specimen - they are simply stunning. The termite is easily seen in the HUGE honey-colored amber piece. This is a textbook example of a termite caught in ancient tree resin (large close-up photo is included for free).
