This is a very unusual amber fossil. It is a large Crane fly (Tipulidae) trapped in Dominican Amber. This specimen is excellent - the detail is amazing. Note that the head, body, wings, and LONG legs are extremely well-preserved. The huge compound eyes display hundreds of intact facets! And there are also four other insects entombed in the amber piece - a Leafhopper, a Fungus Gnat, a Long-Legged Fly, and a Scuttle Fly. All these features combine to make this an incredible amber fossil. It is a beautiful example of a Crane Fly and other insects in amber (FOUR small close-up photos are included for free).
