EXTINCTIONS CHOICE - Fungus Gnat Laying Eggs
Stock Number  ACDX03
EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Fungus Gnat Laying Eggs
Age:  Oligocene
Formation:  Amber Mines
Location:  Dominican Republic
Size:  Amber piece is 0.65 inches long

This is a rare amber fossil. It is a Fungus Gnat preserved in Dominican Amber. This specimen is extremely collectible in that the Fungus Gnat is laying eggs! This is a very rare occurence in the fossil record. There are at least five intact eggs just deposited by the female Fungus Gnat. They are easily seen at the tail end if the Gnat (see close-up photo #2). The Gnat itself has great detail. There is also a nice wasp trapped in the amber piece (not pictured). This is a very unusual amber fossil that tells a unique story (two different close-up photos are included for free).
