EXTINCTIONS CHOICE - Rare Centipede
Stock Number  ACCEN02

Name:   True Centipede (Myriapoda; Chilopoda)
Age:  Oligocene
Formation:  Amber Mines
Location:  Dominican Republic
Size:  Amber piece is 0.9 inches long

This is a rare amber specimen. It is an excellent Centipede (Myriapoda; Chilopoda) trapped in Dominican Amber. Centipedes differ from Millipedes in that they only have one pair of legs on each body segment - Millipedes have two pairs. This specimen is nicely displayed - the head, antennae, and long legs are all intact and well preserved. Next to the centipede is an excellent Fungus Gnat (Mycetophilidae). The fly shows great detail, and was trapped in an aesthetic pose. Both insects are easily seen in the amber nugget, especially under magnification. This Centipede is a very rare inclusion in Dominican Amber, and the fact that it is entombed next to a beautiful Fungus Gnat makes this a very collectible amber fossil (small close-up photo is included for free).
