Rare Armored Sow Bug (Isopod) in Amber
Stock Number  ACISO01

Name:   Armored Sow Bug (Isopod)
Age:  Oligocene
Formation:  Amber Mines
Location:  Dominican Republic
Size:  Amber piece is 0.6 inches long

This is a very unusual inclusion in amber. It is an Armored Sow Bug (Isopod) from the Dominican Republic. Most ground-dwelling insects are very uncommon in amber because they rarely ventured onto the trees to be trapped by the sap. This specimen is very detailed - the many legs are seen on the underside of the animal. The ''Pill Bug'' can be viewed from all sides of the amber piece. There are also insects and botanical debris preserved in the honey-colored amber. This is a fine example of a fossil ''roly-poly'' bug caught in fossil ooze (small close-up photo is included for free).
