Gall Midge Laying Eggs

This is a rare amber fossil. It is a Gall Midge preserved in Dominican Amber. This specimen is extremely collectible in that the Gall Midge is laying eggs! This is a very rare occurence in the fossil record. There are at least eight intact eggs just deposited by the female Gall Midge. They are easily seen at the tail end if the Midge. The Midge itself has fine detail. There is also a beautiful Dark Winged Fungus Gnat trapped in the amber piece. This is a very unusual amber fossil that tells a unique story (small close-up photos is included for free).
