Large Parasitic Mite in Baltic Amber

Size:  Amber piece is 0.7 inches long

This is a large parasitic mite (Acari) in Baltic Amber. This piece is from the amber deposits of Russia. Mites feed on the life fluids of flies and other insects. This one has nice detail. The small feeding appendages on the front of the head are easily seen. This is an unusual organism to be caught in Baltic Amber (close-up photo is included for free).
