EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Horseshoe Crab Beetle (Limuloididae)
Age:  Oligocene
Formation:  Amber Mines
Location:  Dominican Republic
Size:  Amber piece is 0.5 inches long

This is a very unusual fossil beetle. It is a Horseshoe Crab Beetle (Limuloididae) trapped in Dominican Amber. One look at this beetle and one can see how it got its name! This type of beetle is very uncommon in the fossil record. This specimen is complete and has very good detail. It was preserved next to a huge Fungus Gnat (Mycetiphilidae) that can be easily seen with the naked eye. This is a great example of this rare fossil beetle that looks like a Horseshoe Crab (small close-up photo is included for free).
