This is a rare fly in Baltic Amber. It is a Snipe Fly (Ragionidae) from Russia. Snipe Flies are very rarely found trapped in Baltic Amber. They are generally larger than most flies in Baltic Amber. This one is large and has excellent detail. It is easily seen in the amber piece (scan of the amber piece is poor). This is a large and rare insect entombed in fossil ooze (close-up photo is included).
