Name:
True Centipede (Myriapoda; Chilopoda)
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Amber Mines
Location: Dominican Republic
Size: Amber piece is 1.4 inches long
This is a rare amber specimen. It is an excellent Centipede (Myriapoda; Chilopoda) trapped in Dominican Amber. Centipedes differ from Millipedes in that they only have one pair of legs on each body segment - Millipedes have two pairs. This specimen is complete and nicely displayed - the head, antennae, and long legs are all intact and well preserved. Near the centipede is a complete Pseudoscorpion (not pictured). Both insects have fine detail and are easily seen in the amber nugget, especially under magnification. A Centipede is a very rare inclusion in amber, and the fact that it is entombed next to a Pseudoscorpion makes this an extremely collectible amber fossil (small close-up photo is included for free).
