Name:
Biting Midge (Ceratopogonidae)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Piece of amber is 0.9 inches across.
This is a very beautiful specimen of a Biting Midge in Baltic Amber. Because it is a Biting Midge, it may have traces of blood in its stomach. This blood could contain the DNA of extinct animals (remember Jurassic Park?). Therefore, this is a very collectible insect in amber. The insect has excellent detail. It displays the body, wings, legs, and segmented antennae beautifully. The proboscis of the beast is outstanding. The insect is easily seen in the large piece of amber. This is an outstanding specimen of a Biting Midge in amber from Russia. A close-up photo will be included for free.
