Name:
Biting Midge (Ceratopogonidae)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Russia
Size: Amber piece is 0.6 inches long
This is an excellent blood-sucking insect in amber. It is a Biting Midge (Ceratopogonidae) from the Baltic Coast of Russia. Because it is a Biting Midge, it may have traces of blood in its stomach. This blood could contain the DNA of extinct animals (remember Jurassic Park?). Therefore, this is a very collectible insect in amber. It has great detail and was trapped is a beautiful pose. And it is very easily seen in the amber piece. This is a textbook example of a ''Vampire Midge'' (close-up photo is included for free.)
