Name:
Biting Midge (Ceratopogonidae)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Russia
Size: Amber nugget is 1.2 inches long
This is a very beautiful specimen of a Biting Midge in Baltic Amber. Because it is a Biting Midge, it may have traces of blood in its stomach. This blood could contain the DNA of extinct animals (remember Jurassic Park?). Therefore, this is a very collectible insect in amber. This specimen is a male, distinguishable by the U-shaped genitalia on the tail. The insect has excellent detail. It displays the wings, legs, antennae, and genitalia beautifully. The proboscis of the beast is outstanding. The insect is easily seen in the large piece of amber. This is an excellent specimen of a Biting Midge in amber from Russia (close-up photo will be included for free).
