Name:
Cranefly (Tipulidae)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Amber piece is 1.8 inches long
This is an excellent Cranefly fossil. It is a huge piece of Baltic Amber with 3 Craneflies preserved! Although only one cranefly is pictured, there are two others sealed in the amber piece. There are also four fungus gnats, a spider, and an ant trapped in the ancient tree sap - what a party! But the most detailed insect in this amber specimen is the cranefly that is pictured. Note that all six LONG legs are preserved and beautifully positioned in the amber - a fabulous display pose. The head, body, and wings are also very detailed. And all of this is captured in a piece of amber that is nearly two inches long! All these features combine to make this an amazing museum quality amber fossil.
