Name:
True Midge (Chironomidae) & Fungus Gnats (Mycetophilidae)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Amber Deposits
Location: Baltic Coast, Russia
Size: Piece of amber is 0.6" long.
This is a very nice specimen of multiple insects trapped in Baltic Amber. This piece of fossil resin is from the Eocene and has been polished to reveal the delicate nature of the insects trapped inside. There are actually three insects in the block of amber (although only two are pictured). The insect on the left is a True Midge. The head, body, and legs of the beast are nicely displayed. The insect on the right is a Fungus Gnat. This insect even exhibits the venation of the thin, gossamer wings. The third insect, another fungus gnat, (not pictured) is equally impressive. The insects entrapped in the golden yellow fossil "ooze" are easily seen with the naked eye. This is a very fine piece of Baltic Amber with three excellent insects.
